One of the beauty trends for this autumn/winter that I am utterly in love with is berry lips. I think deep reds are so flattering on the skin, and a great way to add some drama to a simple outfit. So whilst I had a deeper red lipstick already (benefits’s ‘no competition‘. I’m wearing it in this post if you fancy a peek) I couldn’t help adding another colour to my collection, and taking it a step bolder.
If you’re scared of this trend, don’t be! I’ve got 4 steps to your perfect berry lip 🙂
1.Prep your lips. I tend to make a lip scrub with honey and sugar, or I love these from Lush. Also, before putting your lippy on, try a primer like this one from Urban Decay. I love this stuff, under any lipstick (fuller review here).
2. Use a lip liner! It’ll stop any bleeding of the colour. Noone loves a smudgy lip line (psst… if you do mess it up, a cotton bud and make-up remover is your best friend. Speaking from experience..!) I’m using MUA’s intense colour lip liner in ‘brooding plum’.
3. Find your perfect colour. Now doesn’t that sound easy! hah. But really, don’t worry. A berry lip can be anything from a deep pinky-raspberry to a dark gothic wine. You can definitely find one that makes you look amazing. I wish there was a magic formula to say which one is right, but its always down to testing and trying. I did a fair bit of trawling for my perfect colour. I have quite pink-toned skin anyway and find that pinky dark lips tend to bring out all the flaws in my skin, so was looking for a colour with a true red base rather than pink. But, I found the holy grail in Sleek’s ‘Vamp’. It is a wonderful matte deep wine, and just what I wanted! Try a whole load out and see what works best for you. I tend to do two coats of colour, using a tissue to remove the excess in between.
4. To keep your colour lasting all day, and without going all over your face/clothes/mug/boyfriend, use Lipcote. It does wonders and is a great finishing touch. It can dry your lips out a little though, so don’t forget your lipbalm afterwards.
I hope if you’ve been dithering over whether to take the dark lip colour plunge, that this will have helped you go for it. Let me know what you think, and hopefully you won’t be sick of seeing me with this colour on by the end of winter!!
